A cruise can be one of the easiest vacations with a toddler: one cabin, food on demand and nowhere to drive. The trick is protecting the routine that keeps a two-year-old happy. Minimum ages, nurseries and babysitting are covered on Cruises for Children; this page is about the day-to-day.
| Time of day | What tends to work |
|---|---|
| Early morning | Toddlers wake early anyway, so use it: quiet decks, the buffet before the crowds, sunrise from the deck. |
| Late morning | Splash area or a port outing before the heat. |
| Early afternoon | Nap in the cabin, or in the stroller in a shady spot. |
| Late afternoon | Pool time or a kids’ activity, then an early dinner. |
| Evening | A family show if it starts early, then bed. Parents can take turns going out. |
Choosing the Right Sailing
For a first cruise with a toddler, shorter is better: a three- to five-night sailing from a port you can drive to. Itineraries with a mix of sea days and calm beach ports work well, and a ship with a splash area or toddler play space will be used every day.
Think about the cabin too. A balcony gives you somewhere to sit while your child naps, but balcony safety needs constant attention; some parents choose an ocean-view cabin for that reason. A cabin with a bathtub is rare but worth asking about if bath time is part of the bedtime routine.

Packing for a Toddler
- Enough diapers and wipes for the trip plus a few days; ship shops carry limited choice.
- Swim diapers for splash areas and the beach
- A light stroller and a soft carrier for tenders and stairs
- Familiar snacks, cups and a favorite toy or blanket
- Sun hat, rash guard and reef-friendly sunscreen
- Any medicines, plus a thermometer
Toddler Questions
Can toddlers use the ship’s pools?
Children who are not toilet-trained generally cannot use the main pools or hot tubs, even in swim diapers. Many family ships have a dedicated splash area for them. Check the rules for your ship before you pack.
Should we bring a stroller?
Yes, a light, folding one. It helps in the terminal and in port, and doubles as a nap spot. Check whether your line has stroller size rules.
Port Days With a Toddler
Keep port days short and close to the ship. A beach a short ride from the pier, a playground in a waterfront park or simply a walk and an ice cream are plenty for a two-year-old. Bring the stroller, check whether the port uses tenders (you may need to fold it to board the tender boat), and plan to be back on board for the nap.
