Kids Sail Free Cruises Explained
Free cruise fare for the kids sounds simple. Here is the fine print.
Get Family Cruise QuotesWhat Kids Sail Free Cruises Really Mean
Kids sail free cruises are among the most searched-for family deals, and they can be excellent value. But the word “free” covers less than many parents expect. Here is how the offers work, what you still pay and how to tell whether one is the best deal for your family.
In almost every version, the child is the third or fourth guest in a cabin shared with two adults paying the full fare. The child’s cruise fare is reduced to zero. Everything else that is charged per person still applies: government taxes and fees, port expenses and, on most lines, daily gratuities.
The Fine Print, Line by Line
| Term | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Who qualifies | Usually the 3rd and 4th guests in the same cabin as two full-fare guests |
| Age limit | Varies by offer: recent promotions have used 12 and under and 17 and under |
| Which sailings | Select ships and dates only; holiday weeks are often excluded |
| Which cabins | Some cabin categories or suite areas may be excluded |
| Who can book | Often new bookings only; some offers are limited to residents of certain countries |
| What you still pay | Taxes, fees, port expenses and gratuities for every guest |
Similar offers go by other names, such as “free third and fourth guests,” which may apply to adults too, or reduced fares for additional guests. Lines have run these promotions at different times, MSC Cruises and Royal Caribbean among them, but they come and go. We never assume one is running; we check when you ask.
When Kids Sail Free Pays Off, and When It Does Not
The offer works best for a family of three or four happy to share one cabin. If you would rather have two cabins, perhaps an adjoining room for older children, the free fare disappears because each cabin needs two paying guests. In that case a promotion that discounts every guest, or a group rate, may be better.
It also pays to compare across ships. A sailing with kids sail free on an older ship can cost more in total than a newer ship without it, once taxes, gratuities and the base fare for the adults are counted. Our advisors run those comparisons as a matter of course. For the cabin side of the decision, Cruise Ship Deck Plans shows how to read deck plans and find quad cabins and connecting rooms, and Cruises for Children explains family cabin types.

Kids Sail Free Questions
Are taxes and port fees free too?
No. Published terms for these offers charge taxes, fees and port expenses for every guest, including the child sailing free. Gratuities are usually charged per guest as well.
What age counts as a kid?
It depends on the offer. Recent kids sail free promotions have set the cutoff anywhere from 12 and under to 17 and under. Read the age rule for the specific offer.
Can I combine kids sail free with other discounts?
Sometimes. Some offers stack with a discount for the first two guests; others cannot be combined with past-guest or group rates. We check which gives the lowest total.
Is it worth booking only because kids sail free?
Only if the sailing suits you. Compare the total with other ships and dates, because a sailing without the offer can still cost less overall.
